The EVAW Project uses trainers and consultants with extensive experience in the fields of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking to conduct the trainings.
The trainers, representing law enforcement, prosecution, victim advocacy, probation, and medical services model a “team approach” to the problems we face when working with cases involving violence against women.
Trainers and EVAW staff are also available through phone or email to provide technical assistance. |

Linda Johnston, Project Director, Colorado District Attorney’s Council Linda Johnston began advocating for victims of domestic violence after graduating from law school in 1993. She represented women at protection order hearings and domestic relations proceedings. Linda joined the staff of Project Safeguard as a bi-lingual legal advocate, providing crisis intervention and legal assistance to abused women. Linda also coordinated the Court Watch Program and was the Director of Client Services. She has advocated for effective policies before the Colorado General Assembly on behalf of organizations and victims of crime. Linda worked as the Public Policy Coordinator for COVA, and collaborated with civil and criminal justice system personnel to improve policies and statutes. Linda has provided training and technical assistance on domestic violence and collaboration for victim advocates, law enforcement and attorneys throughout Colorado. |

Shauna Hosselkus, Training Coordinator, Colorado District Attorney’s Council Shauna Hosselkus just began with the Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW) project in April of 2007. She began working in the justice system in 2003, where she worked in the District Attorney’s Office of the 18th Judicial District. She worked for almost three years in the Douglas County office for the Victim/Witness Unit, she was their secretary and had a multitude of tasks including interactions daily with crime victims. Shauna graduated from Metro State College in 2006 with a B.A. in Behavioral Science and minor in Criminal Justice. She can’t wait to really get her feet soaked in some trainings and begin helping with this project. It is a very exciting opportunity for Shauna. |

Rebecca Allanson, Detective, Arvada Police Department Detective Allanson is currently the Domestic Violence Detective for the Arvada Police Department in Denver, Colorado. Rebecca has over 12 years of law enforcement experience, including six years as an officer/detective in Sydney, Australia and has completed extensive work on variant domestic violence cases to include domestic violence related homicides, assaults, sexual assaults, stalking and strangulation cases. In addition, Rebecca is coordinator of the Arvada Domestic Violence Project which specifically focuses on intervention strategies for domestic violence victims and perpetrators aimed at intervention prior to a domestic violence related arrest. Rebecca has most recently been at the forefront of an intensive and multi-faceted review of domestic violence procedures and protocol within Jefferson County, subject to a federal ICAP grant. Studies include a review of strangulation and choking cases, stalking behaviors, sexual assault and threat assessment application for officers and non-sworn personnel. Rebecca has instructed for many years at college level and to law enforcement officers in various training arenas in areas such as domestic violence, interview and interrogation and law enforcement operations. Rebecca holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. |

Anthony Antuna, Sergeant, UNC Police Department Sergeant J. Anthony Antuna has been a police officer with the University of Northern Colorado Police Department since 1987. He is currently assigned as Administrative Sergeant, and is the Investigations supervisor. Sergeant Antuna was assigned to Investigations from 1996 to 2007. As the department’s only criminal investigator, his caseload included all classes of crimes, including persons, property, and computer crimes. During Sergeant Antuna’s tenure as Investigator his caseload also included all of the reported sexual assault cases at the University of Northern Colorado, not only for criminal prosecutions, but for administrative discipline as well. Sergeant Antuna holds a certification from the International Association for Identification as a Certified Crime Scene Analyst (CCSA), and serves as an Officer and past President of the Rocky Mountain Division of the International Association for Identification. Sergeant Antuna has trained and presented as a law enforcement trainer with the Colorado Ending Violence Against Women Project since 1997, a program providing statewide training on sexual assault and domestic violence issues. He has presented for such organizations as the Southern Forensics Institute, the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance, the New Mexico Crime Victim’s Reparation Commission, the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual assault, and the United States Air Force Academy. In addition, Sergeant Antuna teaches at the Aims Police Academy (Greeley, CO), and the Colorado State Patrol Academy (Golden, CO). |

Michael Harris, Investigator, Jefferson County DA’s Office Mike Harris is currently assigned as an investigator in the Crime Against Children’s Unit with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. Mike has 24 years experience in law enforcement. Since 1991, with the Lakewood Police Department and now with the district attorney’s office, Mike has investigated Crimes Against Children cases. In 1996, Mike was the first in Colorado and the Southwest to utilize the Internet to seek out sex offenders who prey on children. Mike has presented both locally and nationally on child sexual assault investigations and sex offenders. |

Cassandra Harris, Investigator, Jefferson County DA’s Office Cassandra Harris is currently assigned as an investigator with the Crimes Against Children’s Unit with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. Cassandra has 11 years experience in law enforcement all with the District Attorney’s Office. Cassandra has investigated Crimes Against Children’s case the last 9 years. Cassandra was also a first in Colorado and the Southwest to utilize the Internet to seek out sex offenders who prey on children. Cassandra has utilized her knowledge and expertise to talk and meet these sex offenders in an undercover role in which she portrays a child. Cassandra has presented both locally and nationally on child sexual assault investigations and sex offenders. |

David Markel, Detective, Retired, Private Consultant, P.O.W.E.R. Dave Markel is a retired police officer from Lafayette, CO. With 18 years of law enforcement experience, specializing in Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Investigations, Dave adds an unique and interesting approach to learning how to handle these types of cases. Along with training for EVAW, he currently works as a consultant and training instructor under the banner of his own business, P.O.W.E.R. Training & Consulting, LLC. |

Matthew Murray, Sergeant, Denver Police Department Sergeant Matthew Murray graduated from the University of Phoenix with a B.S. in Business Management. He is a 17 year veteran of the Denver Police Department. He has worked in Patrol, Investigations (including domestic violence and homicide investigations) and in special projects. Sergeant Murray is a court recognized expert in bloodstain pattern analysis and crime scene reconstruction and has assisted in over 150 homicide and police shooting investigations. Sergeant Murray is currently assigned as a detective supervisor in the homicide unit. He trains throughout America on investigations (stalking, homicide, and domestic violence), the use of volunteers in police service, and issues surrounding prisoner re-entry for the International Association of Chiefs of Police. |

Carolyn Roberts, Detective, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Carolyn Roberts has been a detective with the Boulder Sheriff's Office for 30 years specializing in child protection cases, sexual assault, and domestic violence. She is a state-certified instructor and is in her eleventh year as a member of Colorado's EVAW trainers. She has consulted and conducted training in over 24 states for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, National Sheriff's Association, National Center for Rural Law Enforcement, and the Department of Defense. |

Karl Swenson, Lieutenant (Retired) Lt. Karl Swenson, (retired) spent almost 32 years in law enforcement. The first 12 as a uniformed officer who witnessed first hand the pain that victims of crime would go through. The last 19 years was spent as head of the investigative unit, as a working supervisor over the crimes against persons unit. Lt. Swenson developed new ways of working with crime victims. In 1993 his efforts were recognized by the Governor when he received the State of Colorado “Diversity Award” for providing victim services to a college community, the first of its kind in the nation. His positive victim interactions encouraged sexual assault reporting and the successful prosecution of many serial rapists. Lt. Swenson guest lectures for college classes, including abnormal psychology, human sexuality and taught a victimology class for several years. He has worked as a consultant for Reader Digest and for ESPN. In 1996 seeing a need, Lt. Swenson helped in creating a sexual assault reduction program where trained high school peers mentor other high school students. This program’s goal was to reduce the victimization of college freshman during the first weeks they spent on campus. In 1998 Lt. Swenson was recruited by the Ending Violence Against Women Project to travel and help train others in the correct methods of investigating sexual assault, stalking and domestic violence cases. In his semi-retirement he continues teaching both in high schools and for EVAW.

Tim Johnson, Deputy District Attorney, Boulder County DA’s Office Timothy Johnson is currently the senior domestic violence prosecutor in the Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes Unit in the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office. Mr. Johnson is a member of the Boulder County Law Enforcement Domestic Violence Task Force and the Domestic Abuse Prevention Project. He has provided training to hundred of law enforcement officers in Boulder County and throughout the state in the area of basic domestic violence investigation, determining the predominant aggressor, self-defense, strangulation and firearms. He regularly trains at law enforcement “mini-academies” in the county. Mr. Johnson has also provided training to schools and universities students in the area of domestic violence and non-stranger sexual assault. He is a member of the Colorado District Attorneys Council High Risk and Lethality Group (a task force of Colorado District Attorneys and law enforcement addressing high-risk behavior among domestic violence perpetrators). In 2004, Mr. Johnson was named to the State Domestic violence Offender Management Board and was invited to train judges in the area of domestic violence and firearms. |

Diana May, Chief Deputy District Attorney, El Paso County DA’s Office Diana K. May has been a Deputy District Attorney for the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for ten years. For two of these years, she was the prosecutor in DVERT (Domestic Violence Enhanced Response Team). She prosecuted high lethality domestic violence misdemeanor, felony, and murder cases. Currently Ms. May prosecutes murder cases and sexual assault cases, and is Chief Trial Deputy District Attorney. Previously, Ms. May was a prosecutor in the 15th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for three years. She prosecuted rural domestic violence misdemeanor and felony cases. Ms. May has done substantial domestic violence, strangulation and stalking training to law enforcement, advocates, probation officers, and medical personal. Ms. May is a Colorado native. She was born and raised in Lamar, Colorado. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1987. She received her Bachelor’s of Art Degree from Colorado State University in 1991. She graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Juris Doctor Degree from University of Kansas School of Law in 1994. |

Douglas Miles, Chief Deputy District Attorney, El Paso County DA’s Office Mr. Miles is a Chief Deputy District Attorney and the County Court Administrator in the Fourth Judicial District of Colorado in Colorado Springs. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Law. Mr. Miles joined the Office of the District Attorney in 1986 and was appointed a Chief in 1993. His involvement in the prosecution of domestic violence cases began in the late eighties. He is one of the founders of the Domestic Violence Enhanced Response Team (DVERT), a collaborative, multidisciplinary team focused on responding to high lethal domestic violence cases. He is also the architect of the Fast Track Domestic Violence Program which processes misdemeanor level DV cases within twenty-four hours of the offense. Mr. Miles serves on a number of advisory groups and working committees including the Greenbook Project, a federally funded program addressing the co-occurrence of domestic violence and child maltreatment. He is a faculty member for the National Institute for the Prosecution of Domestic Violence (APRI) and the National Advocacy Center (NCDA). He is a past recipient of the Pioneer Award from the Center for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (now TESSA). |

Anne Munch, Private Consultant Ms. Munch attended the University of Denver for her undergraduate and graduate studies and received a BA in psychology and sociology, and then her law degree. Following law school Ms. Munch spent seven years as a prosecutor for the Denver District Attorney’s office including a rotation in the felony domestic violence and sexual assault unit. She then spent two years as the Chief Deputy District Attorney for the 7th Judicial District in Telluride, Colorado, and two years as the supervisor of the fast track domestic violence unit in the Jefferson County DA’s office in Golden, Colorado. In addition to her work as a prosecutor, Ms. Munch was the director of the San Miguel Resource Center, a domestic violence and sexual assault program in Telluride, Colorado. She also directed the Ending Violence Against Women Project, a statewide multi-disciplinary training and technical assistance project in Colorado for nine years. Currently Ms. Munch is the sole proprietor of a speaking, training and consulting business and provides her services to local, national and military organizations all across the United States and in Europe. She is on the teaching faculty for the American Prosecutors Research Institute, the National Judicial Education Program, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. |

Margaret Abrams, DV Fast Track Coordinator, Denver DA’s Office Margaret Abram, M.A., program Coordinator for the Domestic Violence Early Intervention Team with the Denver District Attorney’s Office. Margaret has worked in the domestic violence field since 1981. Her experience includes work with victims in shelter, private practice and agency settings. Prior to the D.A.’s office, Margaret worked at Project Safeguard, where she supervised the provision of civil legal advocacy to battered women, provided expert witness testimony and helped establish the Denver Metro Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee. She has provided extensive community education and in-service training on domestic violence dynamics and safety planning to civil and criminal justice personnel, other victim service providers and community groups. |

Janine D’Anniballe, Executive Director, M.E.S.A. (Boulder Rape Crisis Team) Janine D’Anniballe is currently the Executive Director of MESA, Moving to End Sexual Assault. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee and has specialized in the area of sexual abuse and trauma since 1993. Over the past eight years Dr. D’Anniballe has presented on sexual assault issues at regional and national conferences including, The National Coalition Against Domestic violence and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. In 2003, Dr. D’Anniballe was part if the faculty for the national Judicial Education Program’s Multi-State and Tribal Team Meeting in California that helped the teams plan programs in their states to educate judges, probation officers and the community on non-stranger sexual assault. As a licensed psychologist, Dr. D’Anniballe also has a private practice in Boulder with an emphasis in the treatment of psychological trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and has testified as an expert witness in sexual assault cases. |

Deana Davies, MA, LPC, Program Coordinator, UNCO-Assault Survivors Advocacy Program Mrs. Davies a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado with a MA degree in Agency Counseling. Mrs. Davies is the current Program Coordinator for the Assault Survivors Advocacy Program at the University of Northern Colorado where she responds to issues of sexual assault and relationship violence. Mrs. Davies has been providing services to victims of sexual assault for 4 years and as a psychotherapist for 14 years. Mrs. Davies is an approved Sex Offender Management Board treatment provider and provided evaluation and treatment to sex offenders for 8 years. Mrs. Davies is a past approved Domestic Violence Offender Management Board treatment provider and provided treatment to domestic violence offenders for 10 years.

Laney Gibbes, Private Consultant Laney Gibbes has worked in the area of domestic violence and sexual assault since 1989. She is licensed in Clinical Social Work, and from 1995 to 1999, Ms. Gibbes was a certified domestic violence counselor providing court ordered intervention to female offenders. Other work experiences have included working as the Associate Director of AMEND (Abusive Men Exploring New Directions), the Executive Director of the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a therapist in private practice. Since 1999, Ms. Gibbes has provided consulting services in the area of domestic violence, sexual assault and victim’s issues. |

Ruth M. Glenn, M.P.A., DAAP Administrator Ms. Ruth M. Glenn is employed by the Colorado Department of Human Services as the Administrator of the Domestic Abuse Assistance Program (DAAP) and holds a Masters’ in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Colorado, Domestic Violence Program. Ms. Glenn has served on many Co9lorado domestic violence program and funding boards, provided hundreds of presentations on domestic violence victimization and survival, testified before the Colorado legislature, appeared on local and national television, and provided consultation on a local and national level on victims issues as they relate to domestic violence. She has served on the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) board, in many capacities including Urban Co-Chair and currently serves on the Governor’s Victims’ Compensation and Assistance Coordinating Committee (VOCA), Colorado’s Domestic Violence Offender Management Board, and Denver’s VS Network, Victim Advisory Council (VAC). Ms Glenn has also volunteered in the domestic violence field for over 12 years.

Tonna Pallas LCSW, Private Consultant Tonna Pallas, LCSW is a therapist in private practice in Greenwood Village, Colorado. She specializes in working with clients who have experienced trauma, with couples, adolescents, and families. She was previously the Southeast Office Coordinator for the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program in Denver. She has facilitated trainings and presented at conferences on various topics including the impacts of sexual assault and skills for parents adopting children from the foster care system.

Adrian Unell, Private Consultant Adrian Unell is COVA’s Training and Academy Coordinator. Ms. Unell presents on a variety of topics including Victim’s Rights Amendment, Vicarious Trauma, Cultural Considerations, and Legal Privilege. She facilitates these trainings for criminal justice and victim services professionals. Prior to becoming a COVA staff member, she was a past President of the COVA Board of Directors. Ms. Unell came to COVA after an 18-year career in the field of criminal justice and the private non-profit sector. She was previously Director of Victim Services for the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program and a Victim Advocate with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s office. Ms. Unell completed a course of study which focused on the importance of the cultural influence on an individual’s victim experience from the National Multicultural Institute in Washington D.C. Ms. Unell has a Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice. |

Valerie Sievers, Statewide SANE Coordinator Ms. Sievers is currently the statewide SANE Coordinator through Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences @ the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. As a Forensic Clinical Nurse Specialist, Val provides advanced education to healthcare professionals regarding the collection of forensic evidence from adult and child survivors of sexual and physical abuse, collaborative strategies for communities interested in SANE program development and ongoing technical support and continuing education for existing SANE programs. Val has more than 25 years of experience as a registered nurse with extensive practice in the arena of emergency and trauma services and critical care nursing. She currently is certified in emergency nursing, as a sexual assault nurse examiner and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Nurses. Val's professional affiliations include: The International Association of Forensic Nurses, American Nurses Association, Emergency Nurses Association, American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Sigma Theta Tau and the American College of Forensic Examiners International. In 1995, Val and emergency nurse colleagues developed the first SANE program in Colorado at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, which serves as a model program for the state. Val continues to provide care to adult, adolescent and child survivors as an active member of the Memorial Hospital SANE team as well as forensic evaluation of children and adolescents at the Children's Advocacy Center of the Pike's Peak Region. |
